Door Handle Replacement
It's worth it to replace door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. With a bit of patience, you can install an entirely new handle in a short time.
The majority of modern door handles come with cover plates that hide the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. If the new handle doesn't already have them connected, you'll have to attach them separately.

The first step is to remove the screw that holds the old latch plate in place. The screws are usually quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It is helpful to have a second person assist in this area if it is possible.
The latch plate should easily come out of the door after the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or doesn't move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This can sometimes open the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the doorjamb using the wood screws that came with the new handles. Do not overtighten your screws because this could cause damage to the strike plate.
If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, shut and open the door to see whether it latches and closes properly. If it does not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate either up or down or forward or back until the door closes correctly.
If the door is still moving or jiggles, you may have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are not deep enough or are not sized correctly for the latch, or due to a broken or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Remove the Latch
The latch is the angled piece of metal that moves between the hole on the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also catches the door frame so that the door remains closed. If your door wiggles when you close it, changing the latch might be all that's needed to fix it.
The screws that support the door latch are difficult to locate however, you can insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle in position.
If the latch is not easily removed then use a paperclip tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed latch slot and gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch begin to separate. You may have to repeat this process several times before you are able to pull the latch out.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Make use of the new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.
Before you install the new handle, make certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Check that the latch size of the new handle is in line with the measurement.
You'll require a brand new cylinder for your lock if replacing the handle and latch, or your old one is damaged. If you're not changing the locks however, a new latch should fit in your existing recess and will be compatible with your current keys. Be sure to select a latch with rectangular cover plates that match the handles you have.
Removing the Cover Plate
